GOAL of KMRIA Open House
The goal of KMRIA Open House and Conference is to gather educators determined to push the momentum towards an educational approach based on respect and equality.
KMRIA takes the curriculum of each sending school and follows it with the student employing the unique KMRIA approach. The most important aspect of KMRIA, Inc. is the socialization work that is being doen with each student, getting the child interested and involved in the adult world.
The CHALLENGE
The current economy and international affairs put added pressure on today's families. Each family member seems to wear more hats and try to perform more work in the same amount of time. This will often result in children that ar enot given proper care and attention, who get intot trouble in traditional education environments, and ultimately end up dropping out of school.
INTRODUCTION
KMRIA, Inc. began on Halloween in 2002 with the filing of forms to become a 501(3)(c) nonprofit corporation on both the state and Federal levels. By January 2003 we were certified in Vermont and by April we achieved national status. In it's first full year of operation KMRIA had a total of twenty-two (21) children and in the second year thirty-four (34). The KMRIA staff has increased, support personnel have been hired, an accounting firm, and an attorney have been employed. In short, we are growing.
Unfortunately, the rising rate of "drop-outs" continues and surpasses the Vermont Department of Education figures published in 2003 (5.26%). The trend is made worse when compared to the local schools and how they are affected. In this area the percent rises to almost 11%. Add to this the number of students who "drop-out" of school and have not learned basic mathematics or how to use the English system to read, write, and spell. We are facing a new lost generation who know only a place to sleep and the streets on which they live.
KMRIA uses tools of today to educate the children by using the computer to instruct them (PLATO). Meeting people in the real "adult" world and establishing liaisons in the local restaurants. Feeding the youngsters, focusing on etiquette, and "life skills" are the primary objectives in this relaxed atmosphere. Perhaps, a future employer may be met.
